Most blackjack games are played with the same basic rules, although there are differences that make them stand apart from one another. Differences may include:

  • Number of decks - The number of decks varies with fewer decks resulting in better player odds. Vegas strip blackjack uses 4 decks, while Atlantic City blackjack uses 8 decks and European blackjack uses 2.
  • Dealer peeking - In some games, such as Vegas Strip blackjack and Double Attack blackjack the dealer peeks for blackjack; however in European blackjack, he does not.
  • Exposed card - In most blackjack games, the players is dealt two face up cards while the dealer is dealt one face up and one face down card; however, in variations such as Double Exposure blackjack, the dealer is dealt two face up cards.
  • When the dealer must stand - The differences generally lie in whether a deal must hit on a soft 17 or not. In Super Fun 21 the dealer hits on a soft 17 while in Vegas Strip blackjack, the dealer stands on a soft 17.
  • Splitting - There are differences regarding which cards may be split and how many times they can be split. In European blackjack players can split each hand only once and can only split like 10-valued cards. In Super Fun 21 players may re-split all pairs, including Aces, up to three times.
  • Doubling down - Players may be limited when they can double down and if they can double down after splitting. In Spanish 21 you can double down after splitting any two cards whereas in classic blackjack there is no doubling after splitting pairs.

How to Play Blackjack - Simple Rules

The aim of the game is to achieve a hand total that is closer to 21 than the dealer without going over. Each card has a value - cards one through ten have their face value; face cards are valued as 10 and Ace is valued as 1 or 11 depending on the value of the hand. The player will be dealt 2 cards face up and the dealer is generally dealt one card face up and one card face down. The player then needs to play his hand as follows:

  • Surrender - this may be available allowing the player to fold his hand for the cost of half his bet.
  • Insurance - if the dealer’s up card is an Ace, the player can take an insurance side bet against the dealer having blackjack. Insurance pays out 2:1.
  • Double down - generally only available on your first two cards, you can double your bet and receive one more card to end your game.
  • Split - you can split pairs to be played as separate hands with separate bets.
  • Hit - receive one more card.
  • Stand - receive no more cards and end your turn.

The dealer will then play and the two hands will be compared.
